Tips on Trying to Conceive

  • Take 400 micrograms of folic acid every day to help prevent neural tube defects (spina bifida)
  • Give up smoking and cut your alcohol consumption down
  • Get fit & healthy-being overweight or underweight can reduce fertility in both men and women
  • Make sure you have sex at your most fertile time
  • Men stop using your laptops on your lap-the heat may damage your sperm (keep those testicles cool)
  • Have sex regularly throughout the month-ideally every 2-3 days. This ensures a fresh supply of sperm. There is no advantage to saving sperm up.
  • Enjoy sex-try & keep the fun in TTC. When a man is very aroused he ejects more sperm, and female orgasm may make the vagina and cervix more sperm friendly
  • If you use a personal lubricant for foreplay or intercourse, make sure it is a sperm friendly lubricant
  • If vaginal dryness is a problem, use a sperm friendly fertility lubricant
  • Give the little swimmers a fighting chance-missionary position would seem most logical, and stay in bed afterwards-ideally go to sleep.
  • Cervical mucus (CM) is very important-when it is stringy & like 'raw egg whites' is your most fertile time
  • & finally relax and visualise yourself conceiving. Relaxation & visualisation cds can be helpful
